OF COURSE I am referring to the crime I read about this morning launched against scientology sites, allegedly... numerous offices received white powder in envelopes.
I really hate to hear about shit like this. I criticize the Scientologists, but I never want to be associated with illegal actions against people. This is just wrong on too many levels. You scare people who do not deserve it-- cost the state a ton of money in investigations, and basically give yourself a black eye.
So, did the notoriously sneaky scientologists set this up to win back symphathy after all the new exposes in the St Petersburg times? I doubt that.
I just saw this and wanted to write that I Do Not Think Anyone Should Break The Law for this cause. Scientology is down, and this is like kicking a dying horse, in the first place.
Man, I just do not want to be associated .... I still like Anonymous, and let's hope this was not them, but the people who do this kind of shit are just criminal. Nothing noble about it. Psycho stuff.
Childish. Spiteful. Mean. I want to be able to write my poems without having to think about nuts getting ideas. The risk... like I haven't been here before. Not that I think I have any readers who would do anything like this.
I just was reading over a poem where I wrote about cruise, and his ridiculous five million dollar bunker. It sickens me that he thinks he needs something like this. Everyone who cares deeply about cult issues would stop at blaming the actual victims.
If you are in a cult like scientology, you have been victimized. Monetarially, at least, you have spent horrendous amounts of money for a self help group that got crazier the higher up you went.
If you have to resort to crimes on issues, then you should stay the hell away from cult issues. Cults come and go. Reasoned debate and the rule of law is enough to head them off at the pass.
Making celebrity members of a religion feel in danger is dead wrong.
Of course... with all the high level defectors of Scientology who have very recently come out against the church, it is possible that one their ex's sent the white powder. Oh,well... I am sure this will be a big story.
At least for me.
What is a writer's responsibility in situations like this? In Il Postino, a poet inspired a mailman to read revolutionary poems, which got him shot by the government.... I would hate to be associated with a group of people who are inspired by my stories, etc.... to do harm.
I know... sounds almost feeble coming from me. Still... I just wanted to say.... revolutionaries should never be against the cops --- and that is what this action against scientolgoy does, makes you the enemy of the laws of the society that hold us together; the laws we collectively enforce.
If a protestor did do this, let's say... then my response would be -- you are a fool to try to criticize a crime by committing another one.

The White Powder was very likely bs from Scientology. Heck, Scientology used to try to frame critics for bomb threats. (Look up Paulette Cooper, critic from the 70s)
ReplyDeleteI hope they did send this shit to themselves. I know that they are sleazier than their opponents, but you never know...
