A lot of police officers are awake. You cannot roam the streets of a big city day after day and not learn a thing or two. They are underestimated as a revolutionary force, by all sides, a virtual hidden army standing in plain site. When the revolution comes, I want to be on the side with the most guns and that means they have to be my side, the righteous one.... otherwise, I die with a small army, our boots still on and our barrels still hot. Another reason to avoid any violence... I do not want to die for politics, of all things, though I will if the mission is important enough.
Self respect is more important than life to me.
A lot of police officers feel this way, too. This is another reason to protest peacefully... you recruit the police this way, rather than re-enforce the divide and conquer. You do this by having a safe parade of people that includes the officer's grandmother, kids, wife... and in places like Chicago where they are safe to protest to some degree, I think, their fellow officers.
