"How did this happen,' the alien being asked him the question telepathicaly, leaking as he did images of old earth, the city stunning again, filled with people and sparkling lights....
He was standing in downtown Chicago, a empty and hollow place after the war, mostly melted metal. ""Oh, this," he replied, "is the work of a small cabal no one had ever heard of, for reasons they never told us. There were like four billion of us, against a few thousand in the end. Most people didn't do anything at all... because the tv continued like nothing much was happening, then gave us comforting lies, you know.... probably happens everywhere around the universe, huh?"
"Ah," replied the alien, who looked a bit like a clown fish in the face. His body was covered by an elaborate suit of circular blue metal, rather like a drum. "Yes, yes, I hear that everywhere."
"Really?" Made him hopeful for a moment, because he hated humans most of the time and had no idea why he said this... then the leaking thoughts the fish-looking creature came through along with a sense of embarrassment.... and Franklin knew the alien was lying, that he actually thought the humans were cowards who probably couldn't take the rigors of space anyways....

They said their mutually uncomfortable goodbyes... Franklin was about to ask him for food when the alien sensed his question and sent into his mind an image of the grey squirming eel like creatures they ate live... He stopped and watched the alien board his silver ship and take off into the gray sky.
That was the last he saw of the alien. He never discussed his meeting with anyone. Tried his best to forget the whole thing, since it had nothing to do with foraging, hunting, security for his family... the important things in life.
